Embroidered vs Woven
Embroidered patches and woven patches are both popular options for custom patches. The main difference between the two is in their look and feel. Embroidered patches have a more textured surface because they’re stitched on a piece of twill. Woven patches, on the other hand, have a smooth surface because they are weaving with thinner thread, no background.
Embroidered Patches
Embroidery patches are done on a piece of twill base with raised embroidery thread. With stiffer base and thicker thread, it presents kind of 3D looking compared with woven patch. But some designs with very thin lines, small dots and small text are not doable with embroidery on limited size. The thickness of the lines should be at least 0.8mm to make it readable as embroidery, only 0.5mm for woven patch.
Woven Patches
Woven patches are done by weaving thread without base material, thus it is soft and flat without raised thread. As the thread is thinner, smaller details is doable. As long as the thickness of the lines is up to 0.5mm, it will be fine as woven patch. Very thin lines, multiple small close dots, dripping effect, gradient colors are recommended to be done as woven patch.
